I have found ‘organic’ and ‘free range milk’ where the cows are fed good feed and allowed to roam the country grazing and generally have a good life. But even these diaries have serious and unacceptable negatives: 1: The male calves and excess female calves are denied sufficient milk and/or slaughtered for tender meat. 2: The cow when they retire, become ill or otherwise unproductive are also slaughtered Could not find any place to by milk products in US that come from cows not treated in the above manner. Do you know of such a source/producer and where I may buy it. Also, do you know what it would cost to produce such milk per gallon on a commercial scale: Conditions: Let us say, the calves first had what milk was necessary for them – and we got the rest. And that cows that were past production age were allowed to graze in a pasture for the rest of their days without much/any other food (grain/silage) (is this possible in this climate/breed of cow). And male calves and excess female calves were also allowed to live grazing. This were done on a commercial scale. What would the cost of milk be excluding bottling/shipping… Would appreciate your thoughts on this – if you have the time… Regards, Arvind. Guest guest
I can see the label on the bottle now..."Ahimsa Milk" Do think there is a general market for this in California. Do you know of people, organizations that could help a sincere cow "protector" to establish a workable farm in California?? thankyou EkaBuddhi

No, I do not think this will work. Such a scheme would almost inevitably result in numerous unwanted bulls. It's kind of like sex. If you have sex just for the pleasure of having sex, there is a great risk that a child will be unwanted and abused if it is born -- since that wasn't the point in the first place. Although, sometimes parents do end up loving their unexpected children. If you breed a cow just for the pleasure of making profits from selling milk, there is an even greater risk that the bull calf which is born will be abused and unwanted, and possibly eventually slaughtered. Far less frequently does the farmer end up loving a bull calf which he considers the by-product of milk. > >Do think there is a general market for this in California. > I'm sure that there would be a market for the milk -- at the right price. And I'm almost certain that sooner or later someone will try it. I've heard it suggested so many times, that it will eventually prove irresistable for some ambitious entrepreneur. Only I would not want to be around 5 or 6 years after they get started and find out what happened to all their bull calves. your servant, Hare Krsna dasi >Do you know of people, organizations that could help a sincere cow "protector" >to establish a workable farm in California?? thankyou EkaBuddhi > >----------------------- >To from this mailing list, send an email to: >Cow-Owner (AT) pamho (DOT) net > >
Guest guest
I'm not sure how the point got missed, I guess I am communicating incompletely. I have little interest in these suggestions of entreprenuialness beyond it making life easier for those who are seriously interested in cow protection.
