The following is an excerpt of a play script I wrote some years back

entitled: the Enlightenment of Chand Kazi.

Some of it is straight from Caitanya Charitamrita.

You may note that the first thing Mahaprabhu is discussing with Chand Kazi

is killing and eating cows on the context of some Religious reason or

excuse may it be Hindu or Muslim

2 Brahmans enter past the guards

BRAHMAN 1:

We need to see the Kazi.

BRAHMAN 2:

Yes, we have a complaint to make to the Kazi.

BRAHMAN 1:

It is of up-most importance.

CHAND KAZI:

What is it now, again complains?

BRAHMAN 2:

But Sir, you mustn’t send us away. Please listen to us.

CHAND KAZI:

Just make it quick.

BRAHMAN 1:

Nimai Pundit has broken the Hindu religious principles.

Kirtan is heard from behind stage

BRAHMAN 2:

He has introduced the Sankirtan system.

BRAHMAN 1:

....Which we never heard from any of our Scripture.

Kirtan is getting louder mixed with shouts

VOICES:

Kill the Kazi! Kill the Kazi!

Chand Kazi is getting nervous and running to right stage. The two Brahmans

are running and exit to left stage. Kirtan parties enter from left stage

holding burning torches. Some of the devotees pushing down some flowerpots,

being very enthusiastic.

DEVOTEE 1:

Chand Kazi!

NIMAI:

Chand Kazi, come out and look how many guests came to see you! You are a

householder it is your duty to receive your guests!.... Why are you hiding

in your house?

Chand Kazi enters carefully from right stage

CHAND KAZI:

Nimai, You have come to my house in a very angry mood. ....

My dear boy, my uncle, Nilambara, is your maternal grandfather. So, You are

thus my nephew. Why are you so angry with your maternal uncle?

NIMAI:

Yes you are my uncle, I know. Because you are my uncle, that is why I came

to your house. So how is it, that if your nephew comes to your house you

do not receive him? Instead, you go upstairs and hide there. I just came to

ask you some questions.

CHAND KAZI:

Oh...yes, please, tell me, what is in your mind?

NIMAI:

My dear uncle, you drink cows milk...

CHAND KAZI:

....Yes?

NIMAI:

....Therefore the cow is your mother. And the bull produces grain for your

maintenance, therefore he is your father.

CHAND KAZI:

I must agree...

NIMAI:

Since the cow and bull are your own mother and father, how can you kill and

eat them? What kind of religious principle is this? On what strength are

you daring to commit such sinful activities?

CHAND KAZI:

You are just trying to criticize our cow killing! In your Vedic scriptures,

I have seen, there is an injunction for killing a cow in a sacrifice.

NIMAI:

No, that is not killing, that is rejuvenating. That is not killing! The

Vedas clearly enjoin that cows should not be killed. Only if a Brahman is

very powerful and can give a new life to an old cow or bull by mantra, than

such sacrifice is allowed. But such Vedic sacrifice in this age is not

possible. It is forbidden in this age.

CHAND KAZI:

....As you have your scriptures called the Vedas and Puranas, we have our

scriptures known as the holy Qur’an.

In the Qur’an there are regulations for killing cows.

NIMAI:

My dear uncle, what kind of religion is that you have that you are eating

your own mother and father?

CHAND KAZI:

If such killing is done under the guidance of scriptures, there is no sin.

But, of course it also says, that on the path of decreasing material

attachment the killing of animals is prohibited.

NIMAI:

Since you Mohammedan can not bring killed animals back to life, you are

responsible of killing them. ...There are many mistakes and illusions in

your scriptures.

CHAND KAZI:

What you have said is all-true. Cow killing is generally not recommended in

the Qur’an, especially not for advanced spiritual students.

NIMAI:

Naturally the scriptures of the meat eaters are not very sound.

Both laughing

CHAND KAZI:

My dear Nimai, now I understand.
