Guest guest
Whole Foods launches Animal Compassion Foundation By Dairy Herd news source (Tuesday, January 25, 2005) Last month, Whole Foods Markets, a chain of 157 natural-foods stores, established the Animal Compassion Foundation to raise the bar on its already strict animal-welfare standards for suppliers. Now, Whole Foods officials have appointed Anne Malleau as the foundation's executive director. On Jan. 25, the company will dedicate a portion of its sales to fund the foundation. The foundation's goal is to help meat producers achieve a higher standard of animal-welfare excellence while still maintaining economic viability. The foundation says that it will: * Search the planet for innovative ranchers and farmers who raise animals with the animal's well being as the goal rather than producer's productivity. * Create a worldwide network comprised of animal-compassionate ranchers and farmers to share knowledge to learn and improve together. * Collect and compile the global knowledge of animal-compassionate methods into an online library to help others convert to more animal-compassionate methods. * Provide research money to animal scientists at universities worldwide to address challenges producers face in trying to raise animals more compassionately.
