Rig Veda 1.164, v.40 David Frawley, Vedic scholar, has written, “The female cow is called aghnya, meaning ‘not to be killed,’ and aditi meaning ‘not to be cut or divided.’ This shows a non-killing of cows in the time of the Rig Veda. The cow is a very sacred animal in the hymns from the beginning and is everywhere glorified and revered. The Vedic culture is the culture of the cow.” Bri. Maya Tiwari has written, “In Sanskrit, every name portends the cosmic meaning of the bearer’s relationship to the earth. The cow is called go. Go is also the name for the earth and the holy scriptures. Lord Krishna was called Gopala, the one who protects the cows. ‘Protecting the cow’ is a common and ancient expression used to infer the protection of the scriptures, the nurturing of the land, and the celebration of the cow, who is the manifest keeper of the memory of the earth’s spiritual dharmas.”
