Guest guest
Below is a letter I received from BerryBrook Ox Supply. If anyone is interested and can afford the $5000 price tag, these are excellent oxen. I met them last summer. If you saw the ox video, you'd see that they are perfectly trained. Since they are from Maine, they are used to cold winters and should not go too far south. North Carolina is probably too hot for them. You can see there photos on the web link below -- including a shot of them hauling logs out of the woods. These are not just show animals. They have plowed, hauled maple sap, etc. These are excellent animals. I would recommend them only for someone who is committed to using them and providing them with excellent care. They are also well-matched and could pull a Deity cart very handsomely. your servant, Hare Krsna dasi ***************** Hello friends, We hope all is well with you all. Our daughter Katy is off to New England College in the fall. It is time for her to sell her three year old Durham's, Star and Lion. For those of you who are not familiar with this team, I will give you some information. Star and Lion are 3/4 brothers both born in October of 2000. They are dark red with white tail switches. The off steer has white on his forehead hence the name, Star. They weigh within 50# of one another at approx. 1650# each. They are 61" tall. Straight backs and straight strong legs. Superb conformation, well muscled, beautiful heads and horns. Very good feet. They have been healthy throughout their lives and I do not know of a blemish on them. They were Katy's 4-H project for three years. She has won many teamster awards with this team, including runner-up Champion Senior Teamster at the Eastern States Exposition in 2001 and Top Senior Champion Teamster at the Big E in 2002. This last year she competed primarily in open competition where she won many blue ribbons. This team has had hundreds of hours in the yoke. Aside from competition at the fairs they have worked extensively in the woods harvesting logs and firewood. They have hauled maple sap, plowed ground, hauled a manure spreader etc. They have been used regularly on a stone boat, ox cart, logging sleds and scoot. They work well and are very strong. Their dispositions are very good. They do not kick, throw their heads around or push on people. They can be slow and easy in the yoke or shift into a higher gear upon command. This is without a doubt one of the finest teams we have had on this farm. For those of you who have a copy of Rural Heritage's new Oxen Training video you have seen Katy with this team. The price for Star and Lion is $5000 (this includes their 10" yoke) We do not plan to advertise them on the market until next week. We wanted to let all of you know before we do that. If any one of you has an interest in this team we can provide you with more information and pictures.
