They marched through the city on the eve of its famous San Fermin bull-running festival - one of Spain's most popular events. Bulls are set loose through the streets, then take part in a bull fight where many of them are killed. Protesters say the event can continue, but without the killing of bulls. "The idea is to stop the cruel runs and then the bullfights which follow. We want to see a viable alternative," Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) spokesman Andy Butler told the AFP news agency. Protesters had planned to march completely nude as in a previous protest, but did not get the necessary permit from the town hall. They shouted slogans like "Cruel with bulls, cruel with everyone", "Bulls yes, bullfighters no", "Torture is neither art nor culture" during the protest along the route of the run which will take place over the next few days. About a dozen people have been killed since the event began being held in the early part of the 20th Century. Others are occasionally gored or trampled by the racing animals.
