Guest guest
Such an important workshop for us -- we really should send at least one person who could report back to the Ministry of Cow Protection and Agriculture. This will deal with topics which are very important to us, and we may also be able to make a worthwhile contribution, just based on the Minimum Cow Protection Standards. This also is an excellent opportunity to make important contacts. As most of you realize, Paul Starkey is probably the world's foremost authority on the topic of animal traction. It's important that someone of his caliber has a major role in a conference on the welfare of draft animals. Syamasundara prabhu, is there anyone in the UK who can attend this workshop next month? ys hkdd ------- TAWS/TAA/BVA workshop - April 15th 2004 (UK) Tue, 09 Mar 2004 21:29:33 +0000 Paul Starkey <P.H.Starkey (AT) READING (DOT) AC.UK> Animal Traction and Animal Power <ANIMAL-TRACTION-L (AT) LISTSERV (DOT) DFN.DE> ANIMAL-TRACTION-L (AT) LISTSERV (DOT) DFN.DE The following announcement may be of interest to the members of this list who are based in UK. Please feel free to pass it on to other colleagues who may be interested. __ TAWS/TAA/BVA workshop - April 15th 2004 It is with great pleasure that we announce the next TAWS/TAA/BVA workshop, which will be held on the 15th April 2004 at the Silsoe Research Institute, Bedford. The title of the workshop 'Common ground: moving forward with animals' reflects the aim of identifying points of common interest among organisations and individuals working in the fields of agriculture, veterinary science, animal welfare, intermediate transport and socio- economic development in order to move the agenda forward, with greater collaboration and information sharing for the benefit of all the relevant stakeholders, including the work animals themselves. The workshop will bring together a wide range of people concerned with working animals and their welfare, including agriculturalists, research staff veterinarians, representatives of the major charities and donor agencies, as well as interested supporters and students. The workshop will provide a stimulating and conducive environment to exchange ideas and information, and propose new initiatives and actions in this important field. We expect that there will be two donkeys and a horse available for the practical demonstrations of tillage and transport equipment and harnessing. There will be posters relating to rural transport, animal welfare, and other topics. A range of publications and resource materials will be on display. This workshop builds upon the success of last year's acclaimed workshop. Please go to the TAWS website (www.taws.org) for more details about the workshop and the preliminary programme (which will be updated). Topics to be covered include: * Animal power for crop production: new tillage or no tillage? * The safety and design of animal-drawn carts * Collaboration in animal welfare: the way forward * Harnesses for oxen and donkeys Progress reports on: * Welfare legislation and inspection database * Students: potential to get involved in UK and overseas * Ethno-veterinary welfare We do hope that you will be able to attend. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you can come. Please email Suzanne (details below) if you can come, and/or if you have any questions about the workshop. Not only does this give us the chance to learn more standards of animal welfare, and offer our own. If it goes well, this could provide an important opportunity to highlight ISKCON's involvement in animal welfare. Just as our scientists gain credibility by publicizing their involvement in professional scientific meetings, similarly our teamsters and cowherds can gain wider respect by participating in professional activities like this. Naturally, you wouldn't be making a presentation this time, but if they have a workshop in the fall or next spring, that might be a good possibility. I hope you can take a couple pictures and write a one or two paragraph article to be posted on the various Vaisnava websites, as well as the Manor news. We'll all be quite interested to hear to hear about the procedings. ************* I think that you will love the Animal Powered Engines book. At the end is an annotated list of about 40 different projects that you can actually visit, mostly in UK and Germany, with a few in Egypt, etc. On the other hand, looking through all these books, I must say that the Gita-nagari Ox Power book has by far the best technical drawings with the most detail on how to actually assemble the machines. One thing that interested me with many of the pictures is that the main gear drive is actually located above the animals, so that they don't have to step over the whirling shaft. your servant, Hare Krsna dasi > >
