Okay, Hare Krishna devi, here is the reply I sent to the Times, at your

request:

Mr. Raeburn's reviewer did not mention a low-tech alternative to high-tech

sources of energy. There is one, however, that has been in use for

millennia, long before the industrial revolution began the exploitation of

earth's reserves of coal and petroleum. The lowly ox has been man's

companion in producing food and providing transportation since time

immemorial. This beast of burden has also proven itself a renewable source

of power, one whose byproducts are as valuable to man's relationship with

the earth as is its brawn.

When Cuba lost its source of cheap oil with the collapse of the Soviet

Union, its cigar-smoking dictator showed a brilliant burst of survivalism by

ordering that thousands of teams of oxen be trained to replace the rusting

hulks of petrol-driven tractors.

Will this country be similarly able to survive the gradual drying-up of its

energy sources? How high will the price of gasoline have to become, before

we realize that our whole civilization has been hanging on a very thin

thread: the oil pipeline? How long will we be hoodwinked by the scientists

who promise a viable alternative source of energy, if we just continue to

fund their research?

(End of Message)

Obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Your servant,

Rupanuga das
