TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I was raised in the melting pot of sorts in India, Madhya Pradesh, in

the 50s, 60s and early parts of 70s, then I moved to spend one of my

most significant years in life in Chandigarh, UT but really in

punjabi culture and then in Varanasi for several years (I will write

about that later, maybe!) and then was KARMICALLY (YES! That SAME

Guy!) ousted from India and its culture (culture too? Was I?? Why am

I here still on this and similar forums/fora???)

An allien kid raised amongst hindi speaking kids, experiencing no

encouragement from my bengali parents really to go and blend with my

*kind* and just let loose to roam freely amongst cultures and

individuals therefrom that ran into me and I ran into and who opened

themselves to me, gujrati, MAHARASHTRIAN, Jain, Muslim, Parsi, South

Indians (MY 'Dad' just adored them for their intelligence, work ethic

and here and now pragmatism! Obviously he was biased but made no

bones about it and entertained no argument being the authoritarian

that he was).

I will confess, friends! I learned and tuned into the finer nuances

of differences way much later in life. Before that point, they were

all the same to me, and just mine! Chacha Gulam Rasool, the ex-

national hockey star, relegated to a relatively minor role in India

back then as the sports coach in a school/University, the guy who

taught me a lot about humility through his life (not then but when I

*woke* up) and took me to swimming lessons and really I kid you not,

I first realized that he was a muslim and different (but not really!)

when years later his son invited us class friends almost under duress

by that gujrati guy Pradeep (who was like a brother through all those

years) but really wanted to have a nonvegetarian meal that his

vaishnav parents would never allow and made Rasool Chacha's son to

invite us all for an ID dinner, one of the most enjoyable communal

meal we all friends had together from the same shared plate, as all

brothers should! The best banquet I have had the privilege of

attending pales in comparison of that relative simple evening even

though it was forced upon someone hesitant and unprepared for such

love, even though it was extremely selfish of Pradeep to have forced

that to happen! Imagine? A descendent of Krishna, a Yadav, a Mehta to

make that beautiful evening happen between friends separated by

religions and cultures because their forefathers could not figure out

the simple reality so it was left to their children, to embrace! It

is always about food! Food is what brings us together, once we

succumb to our intrinsic drive -- hunger!

Khan Chachchaa, my dad's senior steno or typist who was crazy as a

bat, they said, but who was the chosen one by my dad to teach me

touch typing (hard to argue with 100 wpm or maybe 140! I never could

pin him down to a number let alone surpass it, of course!). I have

been many things, but believe me friends that happenstance skill I

picked up did bring me some pride and utility later on :-) When life

opens a door, just enter it -- even if seemingly a near madman stands

on the other side! Particularly when a harmless madman stands there

just there to teach and wants nothing from you in return but a smile

of gratitude perhaps!

Growing up, I had many maharashtrian friends, Jains too, Punjabis,

Bengalis, and then I moved to Chandrigarh where I really ran into

South Indian Friends (YA!), the range is just indescribable, same as

my earlier experiences with Jains, Maharashtrians and Bengalis (I

might be biased [oh those negative calcutta experiences in 0h so

remote nearly forgotten childhood, but these were the most tightly

bunched up kind of guys I must admit except one or few -- I did not

get to know too many Bengali gals so cannot comment).

I did run into the same *sampling* in addition to other cultures when

I was given the passage to other countries, other cultures!

You want my two cents? Same difference! But the same trait that is

tolerable in your own son and even forgivable may not be treated

similarly in a neighbour's offspring or worse, in an enemy's or

*perceived* enemy's child! Please remember that before you announce

the verdict!!

The same 67 cents (okay with inflation $5.79) worth of chemicals! But

the entire framework changes, shifts and so does the personal

jurisprudence and ethic?

As they say, it is really all about THE JUDGE and not the Judgment

that defines one's PERSONAL REALITY!
