If we are dependant on the economy of the asuras, how can we >have real varnasrama, which is based on the wisdom if *indpendant* >brahmins? That is the reason I brought up the subject of soap. Srila Prabhupada said that varnasrama economy is based on the cow. Simply by protecting cows we can have all necessities of life provided to us, without any sort of dependence on the asuric "soul-killing" civilization. One of those necessities is soap. Please note that I did not ask for, nor have I ever asked for just any soap recipes, such as those that rely on caustic soda. Ash based recipes only. Why ash? Because after the cow dung has been utilized for cooking, that is what is left. How valuable she is for spiritual development, that if we protect her, no longer do we have to go to a horrible factory or karmi job for our living, and how conducive is it for an awareness of Krsna, the eternal cowherd boy, to have an economy based on cow protection as the residents of Vrindavan did. Automatically one comes to the mode of goodness, and pleases Krsna by this occupation. Therefore Srila Prabhupada said of materially attached householders, "Let them remain grhamedhi. Let them come to our farms" What a perfect solution for grhamedhis, which include myself! Kali-yuga family life's the pits for peaceful spiritual progress. If you're lucky enough to live close by a gurukula (getting pretty rare), you still have to contend with the kid's friends who watch TV x hours a day, and preach all its nonsense, despite being gurukulis. Then you probably have to travel 3 hours to work if you live in the country- either that or live like a sardine in a can in the suburbs, with rajas and tamas at your door. The only solution is to be self-sufficient and produce your necessities so that money is not necessary. Making money unnecessary is in turn dependent on being in a VARNASRAMA community, because otherwise the vaisya has to struggle to pay off the land . So he should be provided with land by the ksatrriya (temple president or land-owner)and in return give a PERCENTAGE of his produce- This is the vedic system. Then if there is emergency like his crop should fail, he is given provisions by that that ksatriya, so there is a natural social security. Now how to translate this vedic scenario into the modern context, is the subject of this conference, or one of the subjects, hence there has been discussions on whether the vaisya will have life-time lease of the land or own it, and what sort of conditions apply. Varnasrama MEANS practical. Varna means occupation, and varnasrama means pleasing the supreme lord by one's occupation. How to please Him is given by the spiritual master, therefore Srila Prabhupada has given detailed directions of how to act in one's varna so that it is pleasing to Krsna. The vaisyas must engage in cow protection, and support the other varnas through it- supplying products of the cow and bull which include soaps, manufactured by only go-raksya products, or by-products such as cow-dung ash. This is not soap- discussion, but discussion of vedic culture, the economy of which is based on the cow and bull.
