I don't know about any others, but at our farm at Pundarik Dham, Chittagong,

Bangladesh (the birthplace of Sri Pundarik Vidyanidhi, see C.C.), we are

completely dependant upon our oxen for our agriculture (plowing, hauling, gobar

and part-time oil production). We produce all of our own grains (rice) and

about 35% of our own vegetables, dal, etc. There are two families that look

after the oxen (and cows), I imagine they could claim to be fully dependant and

both them and the entire community would be very hard put to survive without

the oxen. There must be similar situations in other places, at least in the 3rd

world, if not in the west.

Well, I don't know all the details, but in a brief conversation withRadhanath

Swami last night, he was talking about 6 famers they have relocated from some

area there has been drought for 20 years onto a lush 50 acre farm somewhere

near

Mumbai. He said they got them 2 teams of oxen and they took right upo with

them.

I didn't have time to get into a lot of detail, but he was saying they were a

heritage breed, and said how difficult it was to get them, having to go to

some special governmental agency to get them. Also, how they got heritage

seeds. The higher yielding hybrids, bred to grow well with chemical

fertilizer, were said to take 3 to 4 times as much water to sustain their

growth as the heritage varieties.

If you all pray for us, there are a few devotees here in Mauritius also, who

are trying to enter into this mode. I am taking the warnings of Carol, and

others in that first I want to get the infrastructure together, before

taking on a cow and Ox. But eventualy I dont see how I can develop a natural

system of living without ox power. I certainly dont want to start depending

on other forms of power, so we will probably end up getting the oxen early

on.

I would be interested to find out more about those oil mills!
