Guest guest
I am seeking further information about 'Life time protected' animal farming. I am currently taking steps to go vegan but would like to know if this way of farming would produce dairy products that meet with my ethical standards. I would also like to know how far along this project is. Thank you. Jacky Burrows
Guest guest
Speculating as I must as to what your ethical standards are, nonetheless I would say it is capable of producing ethical milk. The drawback is that it is not economically competitive with the milk being sold in the mass market. Mass market milk is artificially low priced. Ignoring the use of petrochemicals and fuels for the moment, both the calf and cow are slaughtered, providing a source of income for the farmer, and removing the burden of caring for them when they are no longer productive. A rough rule of thumb, which will vary according to time and circumstance, is that protected milk will cost about 4-5 times as much as mass market milk, with the milk being available early in the cycle, with the cost spread over a lifetime of the cow and calf, continuing long after no milk is available. Milk becomes an opulence, and not a commodity. Considerations that make the situation more tenable are the use of the manure for fertilizer, the ability of cows to keep hard to mow, rough terrain areas neat and trim, the use of bull calves as a source of draft animals, much lower ecological cost, and personal fulfillment from relationships with cows. The ideal situation would be where an endowment could be made, the proceeds of which would pay for the maintenance of the calf for it's lifetime prior to breeding the cow. I know of no place where this has been done yet, but I keep praying it will happen. - Jacky Burrows <buzza (AT) liverpool (DOT) ac.uk> Cow (Protection and related issues) <Cow (AT) pamho (DOT) net> Friday, March 01, 2002 3:02 AM VEDA / Hare Krsna lifetime protected farming > I am seeking further information about 'Life time protected' animal > farming.
