This is not my cup of tea... but Prabhupada recommended that we drink only one lota of milk every day. Any good thing, when abused, becomes bad. Our civilisation have abused it, by ignorance. But milk is an excellent source of calcium. I happen to listen yesterday, on the radio, an interview by a famous doctor who recommended strongly and against the current prejudice, drinking milk for these reasons. The best for you is to ask the question on the Health conference. There, they will be much more inclined in answering and understanding your needs. It is essential that these people feel that we have a sound understanding of our way of living. Then, they will see why Krshna love so much the cows. Otherwise, they may just not care about Him. Good luck in your preaching, Krishna Baladeva. You're doing a great service for Krishna. PS: But how come a cowboy like you don't know these arguments? --Ak
Guest guest
2-9-01 Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! We also run into many "vegans" here in Los Angeles. Srila Prabhupada began with the argument that a cow can give up to 50 pounds of milk in a day! If the cow is not milked, then she will be injured. And she must be milked very punctually. The calf can drink only a small quantity, other she will also get sick. According to the ayurveda, the extra milk is meant for human consumption. Then there is a distinction between children & adults. Children are allowed to drink as much milk as they like, whereas adults should limit their intake to at least one cup of milk daily. Srila Prabhupada was very emphatic that this was very important. As a footnote, just recently I devoloped an allergic reaction to milk (a lot of gas & pain to the extent that it kept me up at night--most likely due to my age). I tried non-fat milk for a while. This helped for many months but eventually also failed. Out of concern for Srila Prabhupada's instruction to us to drink at least one cup, I tried some medicine to help me to digest milk, dairy, etc. Nothing helped. Then HH Bhaktisiddanta Swami arrived from New Zealand & recommended a four day fast. He explained how it had cured a disease that he had. I tried it & it worked! I am drinking milk prasadam once again & relishing Krsna's mercy! So their excuse of lactose intollerant can be cured. Next, I try to explain how some foods, although even vegetarian, can lower your consciousness--like alcohol--whereas others will elevate your consciousness. Milk & sugar are two of those foods in the mode of goodness. Of course in the proper quantity. My final argument is to offer all our foodstuff to relieve the karma of stealing, or in the case of plants, even the karma of killing is ajusted by Krsna when the preparation is offered. These ideas are offered by Srila Prabhupada but I do not have the exact quotations in front of me.
