The peacock is #1. I saw a photograph of Queen Elizabeth depicted in a movie. She was wearing peacock feathers as part of her costume. I immediately thought how much more beautiful they would look on Krsna. I can't imagine any devotee who would not think instantly of Krsna upon seeing a peacock feather. Then, there's Garuda, Lord Visnu's great Eagle Carrier. Then, there's the little sparrow who was so determined to save her eggs from the ocean, that finally Garuda came and helped her -- reminding us that we should be as determined as that tiny sparrow when we try to serve Krsna -- even though in fact we are too tiny to do the job. Then, there is the swan, reminding us of the swan-like men like Srila Prabhupada who only extracted the milk of Krsna consciousness from his surroundings, and left the water behind. But any bird can remind us of Krsna. We just had our first frost up here in Maine, and now the chickadees and white-throated sparrows are coming down from Canada perched in the apple tree outside our second floor windows. People have puzzled for centuries how a bird knows to migrate to the right place at the right time of year. Krsna give the most simple explanation: He is in the heart of all living entities, directing their wanderings. Up close, the little birds are so delicate and musical and incredibly beautiful -- upon seeking them, who would not be reminded of that verse in the Bhagavatam? -- TRANSLATION Varieties of birds are indications of His masterful artistic sense. Manu, the father of mankind, is the emblem of His standard intelligence, and humanity is His residence. The celestial species of human beings, like the Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, Caranas and angels, all represent His musical rhythm, and the demoniac soldiers are representations of His wonderful prowess. PURPORT The aesthetic sense of the Lord is manifested in the artistic, colorful creation of varieties of birds like the peacock, parrot and cuckoo...
