I started at age 13 working 6 - 10 hour days a week, so from my perspective anyone supporting themselves on only 40 hours a week is also subject to criticism :-) While the I am all for the principle of hard work, it is unfortunate that the economic paradigm of ISKCON has forced many onto the rolls in order to be able to cut a proper profile (i.e. work free for the temple) for our leadership. Difficult to overcome, and yes, very unattractive to truly productive folks. Yet, despite all that, the main point Niscala raises is correct - it is necessary to take where ever we are and try to elevate ourselves. That doesn't mean to encourage folks to go on the dole, but to encourage them to get off by simplyfying their life. She also makes the good point that it is extremely difficult to both earn a living and get started on the farm from scratch. If we are to discourage welfare, then we will need to provide an alternative. some ksatriyas need to come forward and put together the requisite capital to create situations so devotees can have the option of moving unto the land without dissipating their youthful energies just to get to the point of starting at about the same time they start gettting old and should be thinking about getting less entangled rather than more.
