Invitation to FAO Econf on Tropical Silage

Friends

This is to invite you to to an electronic conference on Tropical

Silage (a review of the potential use of silage for livestock production in

the tropics, with special reference to small holders). Please copy this

message to colleagues or others who may be interested in the subject. It

will run from 1 September to 30 November 1999.

You can register by sending a message to:-

MAILSERV (AT) MAILSERV (DOT) FAO.ORG

with the following words in the body of the message (no subject required):

SUBSCRIBE SILAGE-L "Your name, organization, country"

e.g.

SUBSCRIBE SILAGE-L "John Smith, FAO, Italy"

This special format (with your name, organization and country in quotes)

will put these details into the list. But you do not need to put your email

address in the message.

Alternatively, registration can occur directly on our web site:

http://www.fao.org/waicent/faoinfo/agricult/agp/agpc/gp/silage/home.htm

NOTE: We will not you automatically. This ensures that the correct

address is given.

The proposed programme is:

1. Introduction to Conference.

2. An Introduction to silage making in the tropics.

3. Use of ensiled forages in large-scale animal production systems in the

tropics.

4. Use of ensiled forages in smallholder production systems in the tropics.

5. Silage from tropical grasses and legumes.

6. Silage from tropical cereals and fodder crops.

7. Silage from agricultural by-products and industrial and non-agricultural

residues.

8. Silage from by-products for smallholders.

9. Harvesting and ensiling techniques.

10. Additives to improve the silage making process of tropical feedstuffs.

11. Case studies of successful adoption of silage making in year-round

feeding systems.

12. The future for silage in the tropics.

The conference will be on the world-wide-web and the FAO mailserver.

Papers will be released at approximately weekly intervals and discussion on

each paper will be circulated. The conference will be moderated by Len

both electronically and conventionally.

Poster papers may be submitted and should be 1-2 pages long. They may be
