Guest guest
The problem with cow protection is that it is not profitable enough for most people. This is the fact. Of course we are talking in monetary terms. Spiritually it is so profitable that Lord Chaitanya attributed His spiritual advancement as coming from being a cowherd boy in His previous "birth"! Materially it is also very profitable, but not in monetary terms, in real wealth, as in the inhabitants of Vrindavan who had an abundance of jewels, gold, milk, milk products, silken cloth, agricultural produce and natural wealth, only because they protected cows. We have not followed in their footsteps. We have preferred to follow in the footsteps of the karmi dairy farms who raise cows so they can tally wealth in bits of paper and an abundance of unnecessary technology It will be many years before the cowherd here and at NV will become manageble enough that there could be some possiblility of profit for some Grhasta. The reason for the unmanageable size is in the definition of profit. From cow protection one gets exactly the profit needed to maintain the body, live peacefully, conducive for spiritual dev't. When we view profit in bits of paper, and value the rubbish artificial lifestyle it may produce, we have exactly the mentality needed to make cow protection fail. We will breed them exactly for that desirable objective- monetary profit- guaranteeing in time that the numbers of unprofitable-therefore-unwanted cows and oxen will swell, making neglect the natural result. This is just history, repeated again and again. Will we learn from it? It wasn't for want of something better to do that Srila Prabhupada stressed over and over, for those especially on our farms to live simply, using the cows and bulls to facilitate us doing so. That is why cow protection is so conducive to spiritual dev't, it facilitates a simple life like the residents of Vrindavan. You can cook with their dung and its fun. Especially to see the faces of guests watching you. And the smell equals the best of incense, and exquisitely fragrances the food. I am thinking there is also bills to pay on the farms, (some coming from our past mistakes) but if it becomes based on self-sufficiency, these could be paid through guest accomodation. We have a little cottage on our farm that we get a lot of income from, because we are linked with a big city, Sydney. They advertise our retreat. The nearest city temple could do this. It helps the devotees financially and by getting an opportunity to preach they stay enlivened. Its a lot of fun presenting the philosophy WITH an alternative lifestyle, you really feel you have something powerful, and you do because it has the potency of Srila Prabhupada's instructions. I didn't do it for long before it was canned by the local management, but long enough to percieve the benefits, ys, niscala ____ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Dear Prabhu; I found you writing very succint and truly appreciate the points you make. It is the essence of protecting mother cow. The spiritual realizations which come for meditation on Sri Krishna's arrangement of a beautiful animal who will satnd there and let you get the most wonderful nourishment is in itself worth so much.
