Guest guest
Dear Prabhus, P.A.M.H.O. A.G.T.S.P. Before we came to Mayapur we were preparing ourselves to strongly discuss with the GBC the importance of cow protection and the seriousness of the ISKCON cow proctection situation in India. To our surpise many GBC have approached us to ask about our findings from our India tour and to discuss their understanding of the situation and the importance of cow protection to our society. So far we haven't had to argue at all. We have alot of ideas for solutions but what will be agreed upon is another issue. Yesterday the GBC deputies passed on our proposal to stop the over breeding of cows in India. It reads alittle differrently then I reported previouslly. Basically it reads that breeding in all Indian goshallas should only be for the dieties milk until long range wholistic Krsna Conscious plans are established and ISKCON law is properlly followed. Reference to indigenos breeds being breed instead of western breeds and cross breeds is stated in the whereas. It now has to go to the GBC for final voting. The vote was 10 in favor and 4 abstaining. The doubts expressed was once again that it is sinful to not breed a cow when she is in heat. It was interesting that it was some deputies that agrued the realities of cow protection in India instead of us in answer to this. In the last few years we have recieved complaints of poor if not cruel treatment of the cows by hired help in Indian ISKCON goshallas. We arrived at most goshallas unanounced and were able to observe activities incognito. Unfortunately the treatment of cows by the workers was poor in most ISKCON goshallas we visited. The service to the cows is done mostly by hired local workers with very few devotees particapating. Training compassionate cow care is needed. This is another issue that needs to be addressed. At the GBC meeting the proposal was tabled for more disscusstion with the Mayapur management and will be presented again on the 11th. The proposal for a ministry budget was passed by the GBC deputies for the high level of $18,000. So the proposal has to go up to the GBC level and depends on what money they have. There is allot of surport amongst the GBC deputies for the activities of the Cow Protection Ministry.
