Guest guest
Dear Bhakta Lyall, PAMHO. AGTSP. Thank you for taking an interest in the protection of cows, oxen, and bulls in ISKCON farm centers. - "Lyall Ward (IC Resource Centre, UK)" <Lyall.Ward (AT) pamho (DOT) net> "Cow (Protection and related issues)" <Cow (AT) pamho (DOT) net> Monday, January 22, 2001 7:58 AM GBC resolution 1999 needed >I'm working under the direction of Muknda Maharaja and Anuttama >Prabhu to create an unbiased ISKCON news site at www.iskcon.com. >It is up and running if you care to take a look. > > To this end I'm compiling an article on the problem in getting > the 1999 GBC resolution on cow-protection fulfilled. Laziness? don't know they exist? fear of > discovery? complicated forms? stuff like that? This is a very good question. I will address each part of your question. Complicated forms? Many of the members of this conference can attest to the many long hours spent on forming the Cow Report forms. Considering the extensive problems and reports of abuse and neglect on so many ISKCON farms we have asked for financial reports, a 5 year plan, the names and numbers of all the cows and oxen and their ages and state of service-i.e. whether they are working if they are oxen, whether they are milking, retired, calving if they are cows. Actually I could send you the report form as an attachment There were those who thought the form was not extensive enough. And if you think the welfare of the cows is not so important, you will find the report too extensive. However, I for one am ready to hear any input as to how to improve the form if possible without compromising the welfare of the cows, oxen, and bulls. I will send it to this conference also as an attachment for comments and suggestions. are there other possible reasons for devotees not wanting to > submit the reports? Laziness? The underlying problem is mainly that the cows are just not considered important in our movement. In this time of the exposed abuse of so many of the younger devotees and devotee women and the consequence of a lawsuit against ISKCON, concern for the cows is pushed into the shadows again. But if one is reading Srila Prabhupada's books (Taraka Prabhu is submitting Vedabase quotes into this conference pertaining to cow protection) you will quickly understand that cow protection is at the basis of a sound spiritual and material Krsna Conscious society. If you have cow protection, you will have automatically the proper protection of the children, women and all vulnerable members of society. But instead, on some of the major cow protection centers in our movement, cows are used as milk producing machines and their protection and their progeny's protection is secondary if not at all. This is the same concept implemented in non-devotee dairy facilities. It is the same concept that animal right movements protest vigorously. For a movement that has been given the philosophical teachings of cow protection and should therefore be an example to the non-devotees as to how cow protection is implemented, this is a great embarrassment. Don't know they exist? As far as the responsible parties not knowing the cow reports exist, that is really not acceptable as an excuse. Reminders have been sent out to both the GBC and the known Monitors. Extensive private e-mails have been sent to the authorities in known centers where there are serious reports of transgressions of the Minimum Cow Protection Standards. Mostly, we have been ignored and then chastised for even questioning the management of these centers. ? fear of > discovery? Most definitely, in regard to the centers with the most serious reports of transgressions of the Minimum Cow Protection Standards. The reason being that the numbers don't add up. If you are breeding x amount of cows for so many years, there should be x number of cows presently at your center. If the actual number of cows there is far less, then what happened them? We hope this helps. If you need to know more, please send inquiries to the cow conference. Guest guest
Dear Devotees Please accept my humble obeisances All glories to Srila Prabhupada I'm working under the direction of Muknda Maharaja and Anuttama Prabhu to create an unbiased ISKCON news site at www.iskcon.com. It is up and running if you care to take a look. To this end I'm compiling an article on the problem in getting the 1999 GBC resolution on cow-protection fulfilled. However I've discovered that my copy of the 1999 GBC resolutions is missing Appendix B, the bit that describes the cow protection standards. Can someone please send me this section? Also a question. Apart from the GBC not getting on peoples case, are there other possible reasons for devotees not wanting to submit the reports? Laziness? don't know they exist? fear of discovery? complicated forms? stuff like that? Thanks for any assistance.
