And if I am rewarded with > some milk, dung for the garden and muscles to pull something, that is very > nice. Every body does it small scale, each family just a few cows. Two problems: 1) Only the very wealthy can afford to keep cows as pets. A stable herd with even a small amount of constant milk supply is at least 9 animals (milking for 2 years, average 18 year life span). 2) If we say that cow protection is only in the "pet" mode, then unless we can afford this kind of life we should stop drinking milk. Keeping cows is for farmers who will employ the oxen and grow food that they live off and trade the rest to get the stuff they can't grow (like mortgage payments). However, to keep them from exploting the cows, my idea is to have a "ksatriya" (in the form of a trust) that guarantees the lifetime protection of the cows by taking money from the farmer for the cows social security. This trust would certify the milk as "protected cow" milk and consumers would cover the extra cost. I don't think giving away ISKCON land will make much of a dent. Land is not more than 10% of the initial capital in most situations. Your servant, Pancaratna das
