Guest guest
If I think (microcosmically) that my whole psycho/physical being is animated by the universal Mother's flow of everpure chit-shakti, or consciousness and energy, then it is not difficult to see how the flow of my individual tributary of that cosmic Ganges can become (as it were) polluted, and be in need of purification. Every wrong movement of body, mind and emotion, due to ignorance or impulsiveness on my part, would have contributed to darken (as it were) that eternal river of joy and light, so that, by the time I come to serious spiritual life, a lot of water has passed under the bridge of ignorance and become (apparently) darkened. To correct each and every unwise choice of the past seems like an impossible task, because most lie in the shadow of complete forgetfulness, and because it would be like trying to cleanse a river by straining out each impure object individually for the whole length of the river. -------- During his most intense sadhana period, Sri Ramakrishna developed a burning sensation over his whole body; He had been practicing, according to the scriptures, that "the sinner within me is being burnt, and I am pure and perfect". The effect of that practice became so intense--and painful--that it scorched the very ground where he sat for sadhana under his tree of meditation. One day, after a long period of enduring this discomfort, He saw in vision, "a red-eyed man of dark color came out of this body, reeling as if drunk, and began to walk about in front of me. Shortly after, another figure, calm, wearing an ocher cloth, and carrying a trident, also emerged and attacked the former killing him. After that, the burning sensation departed." He added, "Who knew then that in everyone there actually lies hidden a personification of evil that can be destroyed?" ------------ What interests me particularly about this incident in the Great Master's life is the understanding that all the diverse acts of long-forgotten error in one's life can be gathered up as a single thought form (called the Papa-purusha "being of sin", as Sri Ramakrishna called it, or Mahisaasura: consciousness associated with all that separates one from God), and dispensed with at one stroke. And exactly how did Sri Ramakrishna dispense with this troublesome entity? He tells us that when he saw it, he called out, "Mother, kill the Papa Purusha!" And since his words come from one who was the very embodiment of Truth as well as indomitable faith, the Mother did so. And, what is the Chandi other than a guided meditation to the same end? Only awaiting our calling forth--with the power of Truth and Faith which is potential in each sadhaka who sincerely turns to God-- to awaken Maa Chandii, and release one, like a captured fish back into the Infinite Divine River of Light and Joy?
