Dearest all

After Nammazhwar anubhavams of Thiruvaymozhi [on

Thiruvenkatamudaiyaan], let us take up his other works

namely Tiruviruttham and Periya anthAthi.

Today’s verse on ThiruvEnkatam from this wonderful

work is the 50th verse of Tiruviruttham

Let us continue to enjoy.

The naayakan comes back to see his beloved naayaki and

while coming, rushes the charioteer. He addresses as

below:

Oh Sarathy! My dear charioteer! Please drive our

chariot quick.. and fast. The most beautiful faced my

beloved thalaivi is waiting and longing; before her

colour becomes pale and the “pasalai: [languishing and

longing disease] conquers her, let us reach her and we

need to go there. Rush and drive fast. Where- are you

asking? The huge mountain – Thirumalai.. That’s where

you need to drive to. There bees hum singing. Like the

pearl garland that adorns His Crown, the crystal clear

water stream flows down from this mountain in pure

white form. To such a great mountain, drive the

chariot… and quick.

Inner meaning:

AzhwAr – who longs and languishes for uniting with the

Lord is suffering from the pangs of separation. The

Bhaagawathas realizing the same, rushes the AzhwAr and

addresses others to rush the AzhwAr to the Lord of

ThiruvEnkatam… as the Lord is also longing to see

AzhwAr.

In this verse, maamalai word meaning- the huge

mountain.. does not refer directly to ThiruvEnkatam…

However in the eighth verse of Thiruviruttham, thaN

maamalai vEnkatam says AzhwAr. Thus he refers to the

maamalai [huge mountain] to ThiruvEnkatam and that

alone.. and hence it is logical –says the vyAkhyAthA

[the commentator] that this verse refers to the divine

ThiruvEnkatam mountain. In the eighth verse, the male

went to earn wealth. Now perhaps he is returning back

now.

But Azhagiya maNavaaLa jeeyer in his commentary refers

this verse 'mountain' to ThirumaalirunchOlai [Madurai

Azghagar kOil]. Thus AzhwAr has sung ThiruvEnkatam,

Thiruve:kaa, Thiruvarangam, ThirumaalirunchOlai divya

desams.

AzhwAr ThiruvaDigaLE SaraNam,

Namo Narayana
