Guest guest
Hello, I am looking for more information on this community. From what I have been able to gather they are the only Ambalavasi caste apart from the Chakyars who wear the sacred thread. One question I have is, do all of them belong to a single gotra - Vishwamitra ? Thanks.
Guest guest
ambalavasis are immediately after brahmins and have semi brahmin status....one comes across many people who think that nambissans and other thread wearing ambalavasis like moosad, elayathu, nambiathi, chakiar, pushpaka, unni etc are brahmins. but this is not so....it is like some of the Avarna Kammalans wear the sacred thread...but they are not brahmins....it is merely a special and great honour given to them... similarly ambalavasis who had work to do within the sreekovil and otherwsie who were special were given the right to wear poonool. that is why in kerala in the past when kings and nairs donated gifts to Brahmins, namboodiris and pattars were allowed but ambalavasi poonool wearing people were not. yet many people think that nambissan out of all these thread wearing castes is a lower version of namboodiri....but this is what i have learnt....they got special status below the brahmins because they had to work accordingly - ramesh varma
