baindavAsanA : Seated on Baindava

The Baindava resembles the round spot above the brows. The Svacchanda

Tr. says, "Above the HAkini circle there is a disc called Bindu...

there, after describing the lotus, and Siva, there is the energy

Manonmani, which is above the Santi, on [his] left side, etc"

Baindava means SarvAnandamaya-cakra [ the 9th one ].

or baindava, the collection of bindus, Asana, her support, ie that

which indicates the meaning of them [bindus]. The JNAnArnava Tr.

says, "O fair one, I will explain to you the collection of bindus

which are in the form of bija, know, O Parvati, ha with bindu as

BrahmA, sa with bindu and sarga as Hari and myself, O Queen of Devas,

the relation between Hari and Hara is that of inseparable

association..." After describing VAmA etc, IcchA, etc, waking state,

etc, all those are in the form of bindus, thus it is concluded by

explaining, "thus as [Devi] is joined to the three bindus [or each

VAmA, etc] she is name TripurA"

or perfixing a to the name: Ap, in the water, aindava, the multitude

of moons, ie of jivas, Asana, she remains, [the meaning is] she

remains alone by non-difference, [in the multitude of jivas] which are

her different reflections [like the various reflections of one moon in

different waters]

The Sruti [br. Bindu Up., 12] says, "Brahman is seen as one and as

many like the moon in the water"

She is seated in the Bindu, the innermost point in Sri Chakra. Stated

to be the abode of Siva, it corresponds to the stalk of the Sahasrara

Padma [Thousand-Petaled Lotus] in the head of the devotee.

- Dr. C. Suryanarayana Murthy, Commentary on the Sri Lalita

Sahasranama, 1962

1. She who sits at Baindava, the circle above the two eyebrows.

2. She whose seat is the Sarvanandamaya Chakra.

3. Baindava (= the collection of bindus) is Her support.

NOTE: When the letter a is prefixed to the name it is abaindavAsanA,

and when split as ab + aindava + AsanA, the compound is apsu yat

aindava (= bindusamUtaH) tasmin (= jIvakadambabe) Aste sA.

Aindava means the multitude of moons (jIvas), Aste means She who

remains along by non-difference in the jIvas, which are Her different

reflections, just as the various reflections of the one Moon in

different waters.

- Dr. L. M. Joshi, Lalita Sahasranama: A Comprehensive Study of the

One Thousand Names of Lalita Maha-Tripurasundari (1998)
