What is mouna? Maharshi. That state which transcends speech and thought is mouna; it is meditation without mental activity. Subjugation of the mind is meditation: deep meditation is eternal speech. Silence is ever-speaking; it is the perennial flow of "language". It is interrupted by speaking; for words obstruct this mute language. Lectures may entertain individuals for hours without improving them. Silence, on the other hand, is permanent and benefits the whole of humanity. . . . By silence, eloquence is meant. Oral lectures are not so eloquent as silence. Silence is unceasing eloquence. It is the best language. There is a state when words cease and silence prevails. Can you supply the reference for our membership, as it is not found in our base here. Perhaps it was a reference to the end of Talk 122, viz: "Mouna is said to be that state which spontaneously manifests after the annihilation of the ego. That state is beyond light and darkness, but still it is called light since no other proper word could be found for it." ? anbudan John RamanaMaharshi, "rclarke" <rclarke wrote: > > Ramana also said, "Mouna is where no 'I' arises." > > Not two, > Richard > > Original Message: > ----------------- > Peter not_2 > Wed, 21 Jun 2006 15:51:52 +0100 > RamanaMaharshi > [RamanaMaharshi] "Maharshi's Gospel" - Silence and Solitude 2 > > > > > Disciple. Guest guest
DeaR John I am not sure where this is. I have heard my teacher, Nome, say this many times. Nome has read everything that Ramana wrote, and stands as That. I will see if I can get a specific reference. Guest guest
Dear John, Richard's definition of "Mouna" is really interesting. A similar concept is given by Bhagavan in the same chapter on "Silence and Solitude" in Maharishi's Gospel - Book1, where he says: " The Inner Silence is self-surrender. And that is living without the sense of ego". Anbudan, Kumar John <ramanachala (AT) onetel (DOT) com> wrote: Re: > Ramana also said, "Mouna is where no 'I' arises." Get on board.
