Guest guest
Can't really tell what's in the hands. Need a description. Obviously a form of Shakti Ma, due to the conch. Major statue. Statues that large are for public spaces. - NMadasamy Monday, June 19, 2006 11:32 PM Question from Homepage : can you help me identify my deity? Received this email today in SS homepage email : "Hi. Guest guest
At any rate She is a form of Mahalakshmi. - Llundrub Tuesday, June 20, 2006 5:24 AM Re: Question from Homepage : can you help me identify my deity? Guest guest
Hi Llundrub: I am not sure I agree on that. Why do you think it is Mahalakshmi? Geek that I am, I enlarged and brightened the pic in Photoshop -- and I think it is simply a Siva Nataraja without the usual ring of fire. There is plenty of sculptural precedent for that. Upper right hand seems to be holding damaru; lower right is abhaya mudra. Upper left is obscured because something has hung what seems to be a hand-drawn eye on a rawhide cord. But I'll bet there could be a ball of fire behind it, which would confirm it as Nataraja. Likewise, lower left hand is partially concealed by some round object draped over it; so I can't tell what mudra or object is there. In any event, I am quite certain the figure is not female -- Siva is androgynous to be sure; but the sculptor would almost certainly have given a Devi a more prominent cup size. *lol* In any event, that's my two paise ... Guest guest
"Upper left is obscured because something has hung what seems to be a hand-drawn eye on a rawhide cord." It could be two pieces of wood, which are used to set the thaalam in bajans or harikatha. Looks like that hand is holding either a pasam or a snake. The lower left hand is immediately below it holding Kaalagni (or whatever it is called) with cymbals used in bajans hanging from it. It is Nataraja. , "Devi Bhakta" <devi_bhakta wrote: > > Hi Llundrub: > > I am not sure I agree on that.
