Guest guest
namaste Advaityin group memebers. I am presenting Swami dayananda Sarasvati's composition on Lord DakshinAmurti and the interpretation he has given for the same. The book "Prayer Guide' by Swami Dayananda Sarasvati dakshiNAmurte Amurte sanakAdimunijanahrinmurte dakshiNAmurte amurte AgamasAra paripUrNa AtmA jijnAsu manogata murte. dkshiNA murte amUrte prasIda hrdIsha adhIhi brahma tyaktta sarvam yukttAtmAnam tvaccaranAgatam mam. dakshiNA murte amurte meaning: Oh Lord DakshinAmurti. One who has no form(essentially), the one who filled the hearst of sages like Sanaka, Oh Lord DakshinAmurti. Oh Lord the one who abides in the seekers of knowledge of the limitless Atma which is the essence of all the Vedas, Oh Lord DkashiNamurti. Please bless me, teach me about Brahman,(I am) the one who has given up every other pursuits, the one who is steady and pure of mind, the one who has come to your feet. Oh Lord DkashiNAmurti. Lord DakshinAmurti is presented as a teacher. He is sitting under the prapanca tree and the SanakAdi students are seated around him. He is called DakshiNA murte amurte, the one who is free from all forms, and yet, is all forms. SanakAdimunijana hrinmurte. In the original it is hrtpurte. it means the one who fills the hearts of sankAdimunijana, the sages beginning with sanaka. He is the one who made the jivas discover their own pUrNatvam, completeness. These two compounds are in vocative case, addressing Lord DakshiNamurti. If we take it as being hrnmurte, it can mean the one whose form is in the hearts of the sages beginning with Sanaka. Further he is addressed as jignAsumanogatamurte, the one who obtains in the heart of a jijnAsu. A jijnAsu is one who constantly invokes the grace of Lord DakshiNamurti in order to know. What does he want to know? He is Atma jijnAsu, one who wants to know the self ,AtmA. Which AtmA? the limitless self paripUrNa AtmA. Where can I find it? That is the essence of VedAnta, the AgamasAra , the VedAntasAra. prsIda, please bless me. hrdIsha, he is not outside: he is everywhere, as well as within my own heart. I recognise Him as the one who obtains in my heart, and the one who is the Lord of every heart. adhIhi brahma, please teach me about brahman. Varuna, the father of Brghu, was approached by Brghu for this purpose, "what is Brahman? plsease teach me." this word adhIhi refers to that. brgurvai vAruNih. varuNam pitaram upasasAra. adhIhi bhagavo brahmeti Taitt.upanishad 3-1-1. tyaktasarvam is the one who gives up everything. This knowledge is at the top of the list of priorities. everything else has gone down. This is well ascertained understanding, the vyvasAyAtmikA buddhih - B.Gita 2.41,44 for whom is it so. yuktAttmAnam. you must be qualified, an adhikAri, to gain self knowledge. He is the one who is clear headed, and in possession of his faculties, yuktah AtmA antahkaraNam yasya, the one whose mind is fit. Lod Krishna is very fond of this word. BGita 7 -18. tvatccaraNAgatam mAm, I am the one who has come to your feet, tvat caraNe Agatam mAm. I have sought your feet. Please teach me. We ask DakshiNAmurti to bless us with this knowledge. It is he who provides the teacher. We need his grace for his teaching to become real. om namo narayanaya Lakshmi Muthuswamy
