Reclining on a couch formed of five corpses.

Brahma and the other three [gods] are the four legs of the couch and

SadAsiva is the mattress. The BhairavayAmala says in the

BahurUpAsatakaprastAra :"On that great and plesant couch whole

pillow is MahesAna, of whose four legs are Brahma, etc, and whose

mattress is SadAsiva, reclines the great Tripurasundari, the Great

Queen"

AcArya also [sau. La., v. 91] :"BrahmA, Hari, Rudra and Isvara

became the four legs of your couch and the SadAsiva became the pure

white sheet".

She is seated upon the five pretas, or corspes.

The paNca-pretAH (five corpses) are: Brahma, Visnu, Rudra, Sadasiva

and Maheshwara. These five Gods are called corpses because they are

lifeless without Her, and therefore form the pedestals of the couch

on which She rests.

"gatAste maNcatvam druhina, hari ... pataH: Her attendants Brahma,

Visnu, Rudra, Iswara and Maheswara form Her couch." (Soundarya

Lahari 92)

The esoteric significance of this name may be understood in terms of

the chakras:

1. Muladhara = Brahma-Granthi, the seat of Brahma.

2. Manipura = Visnu-Granthi, the seat of Vishnu.

3. Ajna = Rudra-Granthi, the seat of Rudra.

4. Sahasrara = the seat of Sadasiva.

Beyond Him is Paramasiva, in whose lap she is seated [i.e. in

coitus]. Hence, She is said to be seated above these five Pretas.

Sahasranama, 1962
