Dear Afshin ~ as I was away, I missed some digests, so I don't have the context for your question. If you look in the files section, at the information about the Mother Earth Sankalpa (referred to on the digest as EMS), you will get an idea of the numerical difference between chanting the mantra for a particular planet without homa and with homa. I will tell you, seeing those numbers freaked me out. I am just a little turtle. However, I take comfort from the fact that Swamiji has said, regarding all sorts of spiritual practice, "according to your capacity." So, as I recently discovered, I am 1/6 of the way through chanting the malas (I haven't had a way to do homa) for the EMS. When I first joined the group that would have discouraged me. Instead, now I feel good for what I have been able to do, and I will continue with this sankalpa through the year. So learn what you can about the numbers, but do what you can, "according to your capacity." Sometimes my circumstances allow me only to chant one mala in a day, or recently, because of my mother's death, two in a week. Although during that time I did chant a lot of the Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra for my mother. I chanted silently, by myself. I sang it aloud with my daughter; and I sang it aloud with my daughter and my sister. If you have taken or are participating in a sankalpa, like the EMS, then the numbers do have significance. But even this little turtle has learned to accept her limitations, to cheer those who have finished and those who are on their second round, and to keep plodding along, bit by bit. Jai Maa ~ Jai Swamiji ~ Linda P.S. If anyone can direct me to the original post where this compensation method was brought up, I would very much like to read it.
