My dear friends and like minded persons,

Most of you are in touch with me, perhaps for over three decades and receiving my mails/news from time to time on different subjects. I really do not know what messages I could convey and in what way they are helpful to most of you in day to day life or for self realization. One of my friend has put me a question which is reproduced hereunder and may I request you to kindly through some attention and support me to answer the gentleman in a convincing manner?.

“”””””I have always wondered how the soul begins its journey on this planet (of course keeping in mind at the background about the Maaya that always explains this universe). I have tried to explore for a scientific Mechanism and fuse it with our philosophy.

Sperm and ovum both are living cells, but, do not have their own souls because they represent two different individuals. When they fuse and form the zygote that represents the third individual. I suppose a soul enters that zygote as soon as it is formed by fertilization. How that soul enters that zygote, who determines which soul has to enter that Zygote and according to what priorities is a mystery. Probably, millions of souls would be waiting to take birth to undergo the results of their praarabdha karma. Those souls which have completed their karma attain moksha or nirvaana.

Probably, there is a natural order which is determined and set by the almighty that keeps functioning in a self regulated fashion. Probably, these waiting souls have to follow a discipline in taking rebirths and if they violate the discipline or the order (I do not know if this happens), then, they face consequences. I am inclined to think this way when I look at the millions of spontaneous miscarriages and congenital Abnormalities, neonatal and childhood deaths that take place in this world. The other example is of those one or two survivors in earthquakes or other such calamities where hundreds and thousands perish.

I have also wondered how some people can remember about their previous births. I think if a soul enters a zygote almost immediately (or within a short interval) after it has exited a mortal body, probably, it can remember the previous birth. That is a very difficult thing because we can not remember what we have eaten only three days ago! But, we can

Remember certain incidences from our childhood vividly and there must be a mechanism. Buddha said the bundle of memories(soul according to Hindu philosophy) keeps acquiring new memories and keeps taking births and that probably explains how a soul can remember the past(although we do not still know the precise mechanism).

Probably, the day may not be very far off, when with the help of the genes; we may be able to predict even the future of an individual (not just the medical facts). But, that may still not solve the mystery of Our life.”””””””

I look forward to your reply eagerly when I may sum them up and reproduce the text for your convenient reading. Affly Yours HARA HARA MAHADEVA DR P V SESHA SAI ASWAMEDHAYAAJI 13th July 2006

[According to Vedanta, the jiva, after experiencing his karma-phala

in some other loka, descends through the rain, enters a plant

(grain), and becomes the food of his prospective father. The food

eaten by that individual is converted into veeryam and at the

appropriate time, the veeryam is deposited in the womb of the

mother. Thus, as per the shaastra, the jiva enters the mother's

womb through the sperm.(ref: the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. In the

Gita too the Lord says, 'tasmin garbham dadaamyaham'. I deposit the

garbha in Maya'. So, as per the shaastra, the mother's role is in

further processing the jiva that has arrived into her womb.]

How that soul enters that zygote, who determines which soul has to

enter that Zygote and according to what priorities is a mystery.

Probably, these waiting souls have to follow a discipline in taking

rebirths and if they violate the discipline or the order (I do not

know if this happens), then, they face consequences.

[Actually, there is no choice for the jiva at that stage. He

cannot, therefore violate the discipline. It is all as per his

karma and kind the knowledge he has nurtured and which type of jiva

comes as the offspring is again the karma of the parents.

Sureshwaracharya says in a vartika: When the karma is just ripe for

the jiva to take birth, this very karma-force compels the father to

create the conditions for the jiva to enter the womb of the mother.]

I am inclined to think this way when I look at the millions of

spontaneous miscarriages and congenital Abnormalities, neonatal and

childhood deaths that take place in this world. The other example is

of those one or two survivors in earthquakes or other such

calamities where hundreds and thousands perish.

[All this is as per the karma of the jiva and of course the karma of

the others involved in the event. In such natural calamities or

other mass killings, etc. what operates is a samashti prarabdham, a

collective karma. All the jivas that perish are predetermined to

meet such an end, at such a time.]

[ One reply is this: Bhagavan says in the Gita XV ; mattaH smritiH,

jnaanam, apohanam cha'. 'Memory, knowledge, and the erasing of

memory are all due to Me'. Again, we have to bring in the karma

explanation here. If the jiva is destined to benefit from such

purva janma smriti, it happens to it. Again, if the jiva is

destined to suffer as a consequence of remembering the distant past,

it happens to it. Nevertheless, the shastra also teaches this:

Instead of viewing these as just a product of fate, one could take a

positive view: eg. a past memory, favourable, can be furthered to do

productive sadhana in that direction and achieve good things in this

life. If the memory is adverse, again, it could be viewed to

caution the individual that some such sinful tendencies exist in him

and he can take steps to overcome them. ]

> Probably, the day may not be very far off, when with the help of

the genes; we may be able to predict even the future of an

individual (not just the medical facts). But, that may still not

solve the mystery of Our life.""

[in a way, even this is already indicated in the Shastra. For

example, the Gita says about a yoga-bhrashta that he will take birth

in such and such type of family and continue his sadhana. In the

case of sinful persons, the Gita is clear that they will attain to

lowly janmas. Some Yogis with their extraordinary powers can

predict these things with a high degree of precision. But a skeptic

may ask: who and how will these be verified?]
