I have been following the discussion on Gayatri and I would like to stress Narasinha's comments that the Gayatri and other Vedic mantras should be received by Diksha or initiation from the Guru, who comes in the Parampara or disciplic succession. This is the proper method and if the Guru is empowered then the mantra will also be empowered and if the practicioner correctly follows the instructions then he will achieve mantra-siddhi. So when someone reads a mantra in a Jyotish book or on a website, just by starting to practice it on his own accord, he may not expect to receive the full benefit of that mantra. Actually the same holds true to every branch of knowledge including Jyotish, which in the Vedic system was also transmitted through the Guru-parampara. However nowadays it is very difficult to find a Guru whol truly belongs to an authentic parampara which is unbroken from Parashara Rishi. This of course does not mean that it is forbidden to study astrology if one does not ocme across such a guru. In this sense the help given in this list by Narasimha, Sanjayji and other experienced Jyotish Gurus is very valuable and would help us a lot in our sincere efforts to understand and apply this knowledge.
