Guest guest
Dental plaque is a soft deposit that accumulates on the teeth. Plaque can be defined as a complex microbial community, with greater than 10 billion bacteria per milligram. It has been estimated that as many as 400 distinct bacterial species may be found in plaque. If the dental plaque is not removed regularly, it can lead to dental cavities (caries) or periodontal problems (such as gingivitis). The microorganisms that form the biofilm are almost entirely bacteria (mainly streptococcus and anaerobes), with the composition varying by location in the mouth. The microorganisms present in dental plaque are all naturally present in the oral cavity, and are normally harmless. However failure to remove plaque, by regular toothbrushing means that they are allowed to build up in a thick layer. Those microorganisms nearest the toothsurface convert to anaerobic respiration, it is in this state that they start to produce acids which consequently lead to demineralisation of the adjacent tooth surface, and dental caries. Saliva is also unable to penetrate the build up of plaque and thus cannot act to neutralize the acid produced by the bacteria and remineralize the tooth surface. Proper dental care consists mainly in keeping this constant bacteria growth under control. The best way to do it is to do the following at night before taking rest: a) Use dental floss to remove the dental plaque between your teeth (Do it once a day - a toothbrush is not sufficient to remove the plaque sitting in between the teeth). Dr Clark (www.drclark.net) recommends using fishing line, stating that she has found harmful chemical in all brands of dental floss. However some people find it difficult to use; in that case we would recommend Johnson & Johnson REACH "Waxed Dentotape", which is thicker than the ordinary dental floss, does not break as easily, and does a better job (not available in all shops). b) Brush your teeth. Dr Clark (as well as many other therapists) has found that practically all toothpastes without exception contain bad chemicals that are dangerous to health. (The Weleda brand from Germany maybe the only one that doesn't). Srila Prabhupada recommended that we use a mixture of salt and mustard oil as toothpaste (plus another special, more complicated formula that he gave to Harikesha Prabhu). Dr Clark recommends simply using salty water to brush your teeth. Salt kills germs. c) Rinse you mouth, then put half a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate into your mouth (also called baking soda in some countries), mix it with your saliva and spread it all over your teeth; keep it in your mouth for about five minutes, then rinse your mouth. A renowned New Zealand dentist told me that, if one does this, he will never have tooth problems. The reason is that bacterias produce acids that damage the tooth surface, and then dental carries occur. In addition, an acidic medium is favorable to the growth of bacterias. Sodium bicarbonate is alkaline, and stops the growth of these bacterias. Besides this, it evens stops the holes in our teeth! Some people who had some toothache experienced a kind of tingling sensation when putting sodium bicarbonate on their teeth, but then the aching disappeared. Hoping this will be of some use to the Lord's devotees, Your servant Caitanya Nitai dasa
