The jIva(kAraNa sharIra) will remember its past life through its passage of

time between lives and also in the womb during pregnancy of the mother. The

delivery process being so traumatic to the baby, it is said this trauma will

make most babies to loose memory, if not completely, most of it. What ever

is left of the memory, is probably lost during the early growth of the baby.

Very few jIvas, that are endowed with the samskArAs (titIksha?) to tolerate

the trauma of birth, will retain the memory of the past life.

It is said that a properly written horoscope (correct data and correct

interpretation) is a reading of the prArabda. If the prArabda is known, it

is as good as knowing the future of an individual. That is why people who

strongly believed in this shAstra, perform special karmas, known as

prAyschitta karma (remedial measure) to ward off negative karmas. Of course,

the prAyaschitta karma will not negate the prArabda, but could lessen the

impact of the prArabda.

 

This was a science that flourished in AryAvarta. Unfortunately, it is lost

today.
