phanta ("phant") is a hot/warm infusion

hima ("heem") is a cold infusion

kvatha ("qath") is a decoction

hot infusions are useful for plants with constituents that require a

little heat to make them soluble (most leafy herbs, some seeds)

cold infusions are useful for plants with heat labile constituents,

such as mucilage (e.g. fenugreek, marshmallow) and delicate volatile

oils (e.g. mint)

decoction is best to extract the constituents contained within the

tough, fibrous cell walls of roots, barks and seeds

generally speaking, decoctions are inappropriate for herbs that

contain volatile or heat-labile constituents
