How Do I Get up Early?

Gur Fateh All,

I have a very strange (at least to me) problem. Although I wish to

get up early, I cannot seem to, even if I sleep early. For example,

I usually would sleep at 12/1 and get up at 8/9 - which is like 7

hours sleep minimum. Then when I tried sleeping at 10/11 to get up

for 4/5/6, I seem to still get up at 8/9 - which is like 9 hours

sleep. (increase of 2 hours sleep!!!?). I wonder whether the extra

sleep my body has is because I NEED that rest or because of some

other factor? Is it because my body can't cope with a change in

routine so fast? One thing is for sure, my heart desires to get up

early and therefore also sleep early. It's strange to me because the

first time I tried waking up early by sleeping early it worked and I

loved it, but now I can't seem to do it and it's really fustrating.

Any points in the right direction will be amazing! As well as any

experiences people have had with getting into Sadhana :)

Thank you in advanace and God Bless.

Satnam.

Sat Nam,

You need to adapt to your new needs. And the key I think is to prepare

the night before. I always tell people that sadhana starts the night

before. There are many things Yogi Bhajan has recommended to help us

get up in the Amrit Vehla. He says he always left it up to Guru Ram

Dass to awaken him. So he said a short prayer/request to the fourth

Guru before going to bed.

A short meditation and/or yoga set before you go to bed can relax you

and enable you to get to the REM sleep faster. REM of course is the

deep restful dreamless sleep we all need in order to be both mentally

and physically healthy. The yoga you do shouldn't be too stimulating.

It should enable you to relax, thoroughly. So look to the end of the

set and find one that instructs you to relax completely and go to sleep!

Your last meal of the day should be several hours before bed, say by 4

or 5 pm. After that, no foods except maybe for a cup of warm yogi tea

or some Golden Milk to give you a cozy feeling.

Something else that might help is to wash your feet in cold water for

a few minutes before you go to bed.

Your alarm clock shouldn't be a jarring buzz or bell. They're too easy

to slap off. I have a clock radio with a cd player that starts my

morning each day with Japji. It's awfully hard to hit the off or the

snooze button when someone's chanting the mul mantra.

Hope this helps.

Dear Jasdeep Singh:

What you are describing is a deep state of sleep whether you are awake or

not, you are really not awake! This is the predicament of human beings

before they become aware of the light, of who they really are. We are all

working to awake! You have to become aware that you want that more than

anything.

For the moment, you trick yourself. You say that you feel good when you get

up early and so you believe you really want to get up early. But you don't.

Acknowledge that part of you that is winning right now and wants to remain

asleep.

Surprised?

Try this mind experiment:

You get a call that wakes you. It is 3 AM. You have won $1,000,000 but you

need to get up and be dressed in 10 minutes. A limo is waiting for you at

your door. All you have to do is get up and get dressed. Do you still stay

in bed?

Another one:

You get a call at 3AM. This time it is a dear friend who is sick. They want

you to come to their home, to have your calming presence. What do you do? Do

you stay in bed?

Are you aware of how much more you have to gain by doing your early morning

prayers and Aquarian Age sadhana than answering a $1,000,000 call or

visiting a sick friend? If you don't get up, you really don't know what you

have to gain. When you start doing it, you will realize that there is much

ego in staying in bed, like your little self matters more than your

connection with God. It is very humbling.

Best wishes and blessings,

Awtar

SatNam,

I too had a similar Problem, even i tend to over sleep and even

find difficluty in going to sleep.

Try doing Shabad Kriya as mentioned in the lessons (" The long

Sat nam's") , set your alarm after that(just before lying down) and

got to sleep. As mentioned you will sleep like a baby.

Now at times i get up after 7 hours & 15min of sleep automatically after starting to do the Sodarshan Kriya.Do it as told

in the Lessons.

Whenever i do this Kriya on a day,the next morning i get up automatically. In fact i have to take Epilleptic drugs that make a

person sleep more but not soon.

Try this or, for some people even if they make a mental resolution just before lying to sleep "that they will get up at aparticular time time" they make it.

It's a mixture of cooked tumeric, milk (soy, cow, or almond) almond

oil and honey. It's for the joints and great to have before you go to

bed. If you search the archives for "Golden Milk" I am sure Dharam S

has posted a recipe somewhere. God Bless

Here's the recipe from Siri Ved Kaur's cookbook, "From Vegetables With

Love":

Golden Milk

Recipe by Yogi Bhajan

1/8 tsp. turmeric

½ cup water

1 cup milk

1-2 Tbsp. almond oil (optional)

honey to taste

Boil water and turmeric in small saucepan over medium-high heat for 8

minutes (the turmeric must be fully cooked). Meanwhile, bring the milk

and almond oil to boiling point in a separate pan and remove from

heat. Combine the two mixtures and add honey to taste.

Now, what I don't say in the cookbook is that you can easily make more

than one serving at a time and keep it in the fridge. Also, I really

prefer it with a lot more turmeric. It certainly can't hurt to use

more. I suggest using ½ tsp. per cup. And, if you have Turmeric Paste

made, you can just heat up the milk and almond oil with a teaspoon of

turmeric paste. Try adding a little freshly grated nutmeg, too. Mmmm!
