Guest guest
Hi Nice seeing ur site and esp the article on Lajja Gauri: http://www.shaktisadhana.org/Newhomepage/shakti/lajjahGauri.html She is normally shown without a head but I recently came across her image in a stepwell - complete with head and along with a small carving of Ganeshji. Does it signify something different? If you want I can email the image to you ... Thanks TSRandhawa
Guest guest
Hi TS: Thanks for writing. Sure, would love to see the image; but the human-head variations are no so uncommon, and generally signify the same thing as other Lajja Gauri forms. The "anthropomorphic" Lajja (i.e., with human female head) was especially popular in Rajasthan and Gujarat (though a couple of examples exist in Maharashtra). In fact the human-headed Lajjas predominated in the northwest regions, while exclusively lotus-headed forms are found in central and south India. They are mostly contemporary with one another, most having been sculpted in the 500's and 600's CE. You don't mention where you came across this Lajja. Am I right about the location?
