Dear Members:

Vara Lakshmi Vrattam falls on August 4th, 2006. It is a powerful

ritual which is said to be equivalent to propitiating the 8 forms of

Lakshmi seperately. The power of the ritual is such that

chitranemi - a shiva Gana who was cursed by Goddess Parvati to

suffer from Leprosy (it is another matter that the gana did not do

any mistake whatsoever....Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti were playing

a game of dice and were divided in their opinion about the outcome.

They asked CHitranemi who was nearby to moderate...Chitranemi -

honestly told the true outcome that Lord Shiva was the

winner....Goddess Shakti mistook that he was telling this judgement

only out of his loyalty to Lord Shiva and cursed him for showing

partiality. Lord shiva explained matters to Goddess Shakti and

implored Her to give the remedy for Chitranemi's curse. Shakti

replied that the day when people perform VAralakshmi pooja, he will

get cured. Chitranemi witnessed a group of people performing the

pooja and got cured of his ailment. Such is the power of this pooja

which grants all desires to the worshippers.

Generally this pooja is to be initiated in the 1st year, 3rd year,

or 5th year after marriage and is to be performed every year

religiously for overall prosperity in the family. The details of

the ritual can be had from respected Pandits or persons already

performing this pooja in your neighbourhood. If the elaborate pooja

cannot be performed with austerities (on this day women performing

this pooja are supposed to maintain high standards of ritual purity

like not eating outside food, abstaining from onion, garlic, etc.),

then simple worship to Goddess Mahalaxmi either invoking Her in the

pooja lamp or in a clean pot of water (Kalasam) and chanting Sri

Suktham, Lakshmi ashtothram, or reciting Lakshmi Devi Maala mantraas

in the case of initiated persons will suffice.

May Goddess in Her form as Varalakshmi bless us and all our loved

ones in every way.

Blessed be.

Pandit R. DAKSHINAMOORTHI.
