Sri Bhattar Kuzham - 4

 

Adhering to its goals of enhancing contemporary Sri Vaishnava

traditions and practice, Sri Bhattar Kuzham conducts a wide range of

volunteer and social service activities throughout the year. All

these activities contribute to the improvement in the quality of

life for residents of Srirangam as well as maintenance of important

shrines and mathams. Each month, a Vidwan (Vidwath vandanam), an

Acharya (Acharya vandanam), and a sannidhi (Sannidhi vandanam) are

honored and presented with various provisions and sambhavana. In

addition, one or two underprivileged families are provided with rice

and other provisions.

 

Each month, SBK students, parents and volunteers clean one sannidhi

as well as one thirumaaligai (home) of an Acharya.

In the thirumaaligais, the volunteers thoroughly dust, sweep, mop,

wash walls, and arrange items and furniture neatly, removing unused

items. They also assist Acharya families in organizing books and

other materials.

Volunteers clean the outdoors and indoors of the designated sannidhi

for the month. They also attend to the maintenance of flower

gardens around the sannidhi as necessary. In addition, SBK

volunteers take the trouble to facilitate devotees' divine darshan

of the sannidhis in and around Periya Kovil (Srirangam).

 

Much service is conducted by SBK towards aiding the underprivileged

population in Srirangam. Disadvantaged students and their families

receive financial assistance in several ways. Students are given

uniforms, textbooks, and notebooks for school and in some cases fees

to attend school for a year and up to graduation. Their families

are assisted with grains and other provisions. In the month of

June, 35 students received tuition fees, books, and notebooks and

ten students were given uniforms for school.
