This year was no different. It started the previous day with the Gundicha Marjanam, where the temple was thoroughly cleaned in preparation for Lord Jagannatha's arrival. Devotees of all ages eagerly participated in the event. The next day devotees arrived at the Rajapur Jagannatha Mandir. The three rathas (chariots) were there ready to transport the Lord. The deities were then brought unto the rathas and the procession began. What a grand procession it was! From the beginning to the end this was the order of the procession: In the front there was a large group of motorcycles bearing flags announcing the Lord’s arrival. Then there were students also carrying flags. That was followed by brightly dressed matajis carrying conch shells and bells. Next came a two bullock carts. Then there was the Parswanath Band, then stilt-walkers, then matajis carrying flower lamps, then another group of the band. Next came Srila Prabhupada on his own ratha. Then there was a mini Ratha with a small set of Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra devi. This was followed by a kirtan party led by students of the Bhaktivedanta National School. Then came Lord Baladeva's Ratha. A mataji's kirtan party followed singing for Subhadra Devi who's ratha came next. And finaly, the main Kirtan Party followed by Jagannath's Ratha. Oh, wait, after that there was also some prasad and water distribution lorries. On the 5th of July Lord Jagannatha returned back to the Rajapur Jagannath Mandir after staying in the Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir for over a week. The procession was just as grand as the main Ratha Yatra festival. Visit the Mayapur.com photo gallery for more photos Top Snan Yatra Festival What a day! Which day is it? Snan Yatra, the day when Lord Jagannatha is publicly bathed. This festival occurs two weeks prior to the Ratha Yatra festival. It started in the early morning as devotees took clay pots to the Ganga. The devotees collected the pure Ganga water to use for bathing the Lord.  Visit the gallery for more photos. After getting water, the devotees went on a sankirtan procession all the way to Jagannatha Mandir, some 5 kilometers away. In the meantime, the smaller Jagannath deities from the Gada and Brahmacari Kitchens, traveled in a elaborately decorated SUV to Jagannatha Mandir to take part in the festival. At the Rajapur Jagannatha Mandir, the main Jagannatha deities were carried from their altar to the bathing platform. After receiving an arotik the abhiseka began. Lord Jagannatha is very merciful and does not limit the opportunity to bath Him to the pujaris. No, everyone is allowed to bath him! Thousands of devotees come from all over, regardless of cast or creed, with water, milk, coconut juice, any pure substance to bathe the Lord. Some devotees wait in line from early in the morning in order to be the first to worship the Lord. The bathing went on from 8 in the morning till about noon. The deities were then returned to the altar. In the afternoon, there was a special darsan where the Lord wares a special elephant outfit. This is the last darsan of Lord Jagannatha till the Ratha Yatra festival, which is two weeks later. This is the festival honouring the pastime between Raghunatha das Goswami and Lord Nityananda. In that lila, Lord Nityananda requested Raghunatha das to prepare flat rice mixed with yogurt for all of His followers. Raghunatha das fulfilled that request so nicely that Lord Chaitanya appeared there to take part in the event Every year devotees from ISKCON Mayapur come to panihati to distribute Chira-Dahi to pilgrims. This year was no exception. A bus full of devotees came for the event and took part in distribution of prasadam. Despite several setback we faced, such as our bus breaking down, we finally made it after 6 hours of traveling. Several hundred thousand pilgrims come to Panihati, bringing offerings of flat rice and yogurt to the place where the original pastime took place. Just as in the description of the original pastime, there were so many people that some devotees had to sit in the Ganga since there was no place to stand. We had our own pandal set up for the event. Here we all participated in distributing chira-dahi prasad to pilgrims as well as giving open lectures on Chaitanya Lila and having ecstatic kirtans! The program was a great success, and I certainly would like to visit again.
