Guest guest
When I was a boy and visited the island in the middle where my grandfater was born I remember the walls and tables were filled with embroideries. The women sat at home, a lot of the time fearing for the life of life of their husbands and sons. For periods up to 70% of the men on this island died at sea, nearly all of them on the reefs just outside. A long time ago a large fishingboat was fishing outside the Shetland Islands. The men were rowing in smaller boats and the captains daughter who was twelwe was alone aboard. Then mist and wind arrived and the boat drifted away from the men. All the way across the sea, until it arrived here in a great storm. First crossing the dangerous reefs outside the islands, and then the ones on the inside. In calm weather with a map, this is very difficult. The boat landed on the beach, and the girl had tied herself to the mast. For some reason she was adopted by a local family and stayed here for many years. The sand comes and goes so sometimes the remains of the wreck appears. http://www.ferryfee.com/bluesky/islands/19.htm Alan
