Guest guest
RAJKOT/BHUJ, India (3 Aug, 2006): The fear of an impending doom brought about by the meteorite shower on Monday has been replaced by a religious fervour, with superstitious villagers worshipping fragments of what they believe are meteorites. One such person, a retired policeman in Jamnagar, started performing puja before a "floating" stone. Jambha Gagubhai Jadeja, who saw the stone floating in a puddle of water, believed it was a blessing of Goddess Dashama. There was also talk that the floating stones were similar to those unleashed by Lord Rama to build a bridge across the ocean to reach Lanka. It was only after Jadeja heard about the district collector's appeal to hand over the meteorites that he informed the police control room. Officials handed over the stone to a forensic science laboratory. FSL officials declared that it was not a meteorite piece. But superstition is still ruling over reason. "My son picked up such a stone and later I found that he developed a rash on his hands," said Hansa Bai, a villager in Jamnagar district. "I believe these stones have been sent by God." Meanwhile, a two-member team of the Geological Survey of India, did not find any samples which could be pieces of meteorites in Rajkot. In Kutch, the officials face a different kind of a problem. People of Vandhiya village in Bhachau taluka are busy collecting all kinds of stones and handing them over to the police. They are also holding special prayer sessions to ward off evil. Guest guest
This is why forbidding government interference in religion is so important, it also works in reverse, keeping mischevious souls from tying up the police with such things as rock inspections. Darn, I wish that would catch on here.
