Could you explain please? Thank you, Gary > Everything we do in life is easier and more productive if we have inspiration… So in this tradition we seek the Goddess's help to give us that someone who can inspire us i.e. a Guru. We ask this through the song called the Argala Stotram or song that opens the bolt or the door to Chandi's heart i.e. we ask for a Guru. The song starts by praising the Goddess and in the end in verse 24. we ask, Give me a wife in harmony with my mind, who follows the changes of mind, and who can lead a family of noble birth across the difficulties of the ocean of objects and their relationships. And here what we are really asking is to give us a Guru who knows us and our ways and who can successfully lead us to Her… Now the next song in this tradition is the the Kilakam (or the Pin that holds the Chandi closed) stotram which opens the Pin … Here the author states that Siva has placed a seal on the Chandi which is, Verse 8 As one gives, so in return does one receive, and by no other means is She pleased. And this is the form of the pin by which it has been bound by the Great God. What this means is that, the benefits of the Chandi is always in accordance with our approach to our chanting. What does it mean? To understand this lets take couple of examples – when we turn on the swtich and the light comes on (physical action) it very simple cut and dry. But lets take the example of a person visiting a beautiful beach, everything is beautiful when he first sees it but soon he wants to go back to his own haunts in the city. Now let's say that this person befriended a local and he showed him through his vast experience and knowledge, the inner beauty and the rhythms of the ocean and the beach. Now he is hooked decides to make it his new home (this has a psychological element to it). Humans by our nature have psychological approach to what we do. If we chant the Chandi without understanding its full scope we will not get its full benefits but if we understand it and then chant it with love we will receive Her Complete Grace… For that to happen we need someone who can inspire us and teach us to love the Chandi – a Guru or someone who is already in love with Her… Now when we approach such a person two things happen, they are encapsuled in the Sapodhara and the Kilaka mantras… The Sapodhara mantra says, Om hrim klim srim kram krim candika devyai sapanasanugrham kuru kuru svaha… What we ask through this mantra is "Oh, Goddess (Guru) fulfill my desire to be completely in love with Candika, by dissolving my ignorance and making my will strong thereby destroying the difficulties or curses which prevent me…" Here we are asking the Goddess to give us the knowledge by which we can love Her. But when this mantra is given to you by a master he can transmit his clarity and love to you because he is like the local in the example above, he can surely inspire you… Now what is the inspiration which opens the pin... It is found in the Kilaka mantra… Om srim klim hrim saptasati candike utkilanam kuru kuru svaha… What is says is, "The complete love you desire for Goddess Chandika is found in 700 verses of the Chandi…" When this is uttered by a master who is in love with Chandi he makes you see the truth of it immediately and the pin is removed… Now you may ask this is all good but I don't have a master or someone to inspire me, what do I do? Don't worry the Kilaka stotram has an answer for that… In verse 9 it says… The person who constantly recites, clearly removes the pin and becomes an attained one. That person joins the retinue of the Goddess and becomes a celestial singer. What the verse states is that even if you don't have a Guru to inspire you, you still can fall in love with the Chandi by constantly reciting the 700 verses and this will remove the Pin or your ignorance about Her and you will fall in love with Her… It is like in the example above when you stop being a tourist and you spend time discovering the ocean and beach by yourself even if you have no one to show you around, and soon enough you don't want to leave the place… As the Verse 6 says… There is no end of its merits… When you approach Her with love She is an endless Joy, a loving and giving Mother… Jai Sri Ramakrishna!
