Kali Irritated By Heightened Airport Security?

LONDON (August 16, 2006): Lost luggage, a global security alert, a

fire, an attempted break-in: an Indian theatre company was wondering

today whether its appearances at Edinburgh's world famous arts

festival were jinxed.

The Teamwork troupe had been due to stage the European premiere of

its show "Transposition" in the Scottish capital on Monday until

thousands of pounds' worth of sets, costumes and equipment went

missing en-route on Saturday.

At the same time, the eight cast and crew flew into London's Gatwick

airport amid an international security alert prompted by the arrest

of 24 people on suspicion of an alleged plot to blow up US-bound

aircraft.

The weary travellers then had to chase away would-be burglars who

tried to break into their rented Edinburgh flat on Sunday.

Company manager Sanjoy Roy told the Scottish Press Association news

agency that they may have been tempting fate by trying to get a

giant puppet of Indian goddess Kali through heightened security

checks.

"We should have known getting the goddess of mass destruction

through tight airport security would have been a bit tricky but

we've had such bad luck it seems the goddess of the 'Fringe' doesn't

like us very much either," he said.

Teamwork's previous visits to the Edinburgh 'Fringe' have similarly

been blighted by bad luck, Mr Roy said.

In 2004 the entire set was lost en-route, forcing the company to

hastily rebuild it while the previous year, a band of street

magicians accidentally set fire to a different flat where the

performers were staying.

Several shows of Transposition - billed as a love story told with

Indian dance, martial arts and life-size puppets - have been

cancelled because of the missing luggage and sets.
