Guest guest
the dasa mahavidyas are 10 forms of the devi worshipped in shakta agamas. they represent 10 aspects of the devi. generally practicing the worship of any one form of devi or mahavidya is said to be more than enough to be handled in a single lifetime. 3 froms are most popular in shakta and smarta culture 1> Kali 2> Tara 3> Tripura or Sodoshi. (Sri Vidya refrers to traditions which revolve around worshipping goddess Tripura and her various emancipiations) Other forms of mahavidya worship are less popular (at least as a means of sadhna). Other forms are more commonly worshipped occationally for boons and remove the malefic effects of planets. Each mahavidya is related to one of the planets (incl. earth). To begin worshipping a mahavidya one must get initiated into a parampara or tradition of gurus who have worshipped the mahavidya and attained shiddhis (meaning spiritual attainments). Guest guest
Thanks for this information! Surya [sun] -- Matangi Soma [Moon] -- Kamala Mangala [Mars] -- Bagalamukhi Budha [Mercury] -- Tripurasundari Brihaspati [Jupiter] -- Tara Shukra [Venus] -- Bhuvaneshvari Shani [saturn] -- Kali Rahu [North Node] -- Chinnamastika Ketu [south Node] -- Dhumavati The tenth Mahavidya that's missing is Bhairavi, and I guess she's associated with the Earth. Directional correspondences might be: North-east -- Tara East -- Matangi South-east -- Bhuvanishvari North -- Tripuras. South -- Bagalam. North-west -- Kamala West -- Kali South-west -- Chinnamast. Guest guest
Why would Bhuvaneshvari not be associated with the Earth? I can't imagine Bhairavi associated with the Earth, especially in Her stead. Jai Maa! Surya - Len Rosenberg Thursday, August 24, 2006 12:37 PM RE: Re: Dasa Mahavidyas Thanks for this information! Guest guest
It makes sense to see Kamala (Lakshmi) as associated with Venus, and Dhumavati (Alakshmi?) associated with Rahu and the inauspicious South-west direction (also ruled by Nirriti, Vedic goddess of misery and witchcraft). I've had interesting insights, meditating on the Mahavidyas, that since Alakshmi is the elder sister, Lakshmi ceded her Venusian space to her inauspicious sister. The sisters have swapped rulerships, and where one is present, the other is always accessible. -- Len/ Black Lotus vikas <vikasjeer > wrote: bhuvanehswari is for moon and kamala for venus. with regards vikas , Len Rosenberg <kalipadma108 wrote: > > I've read a completely different set of correspondences, listed below, as well... > > East (Sun) -- Chinnamastika > South-east (Venus) -- Dhumavati > South (Mars) -- Bagalamukhi > South-west (Rahu) -- Kamala > West (Saturn) -- Bhuvaneshvari > North-west (Moon) -- Matangi > North (Mercury) -- Tara > North-east (Jupiter) -- Tripurasundari > Zenith -- Kali > Nadir -- Bhairavi (or Durga) > > -- Len > > > > Mahamuni Das <mahamuni wrote: Why would Bhuvaneshvari not be associated with the Earth?
