Guest guest
What do the knowledgable people think here about the similarities and dissimilarities between the Buddhist Bodhisattwa Tara and the Hindu Godess Tara. I'm not talking about historical treatment ,rather about how philosophically and spiritually they are same of different?? To me (ofcourse with limited knowledge) they seem quite different in temperment :-) Hari Om
Guest guest
Personally, I think they are very similar. Both are beseeched for carrying one across the ocean of samsara. I would say that Goddess Tara is a fully enlightened Buddha, as is also the Mahavidya Tara, whereas Bodhisattva tara is a nearly omniscient Bodhisattva of at least 10th Bhumi. In either case knowledge of one will further knowledge of the other. I personally find the Buddhist and Hindu devata fill out jnana and prajna of each other in a complimentary fashion. I think in ancient times we didn't always make intellectual lines between the two tantras. Especially as some Naths and Mahasiddhas belong to both lineages of tantras. For instance it is almost certain that the Kurukulle version of Red Tara is the Buddhist version of Sri Lalita. Especially since Oddiyana is at the center of the Sri Chakra, and Kurukulle is considered the innermost essencial Dakini. I would consider Goddess Tara to be like an amalgam of all the 21 Bodhisattva Taras. And more, in the sense of her being the Mahavidya. One may find that Mahavidya Tara worship is more vamacharya than Boddhisattva tara practices. Just a few thoughts. Hopefully not too muddled for people's edification. May it benefit. - "Saikat Maitra" <singhi_kaya (AT) (DOT) co.in> <> Friday, August 18, 2006 10:15 AM Goddess Tara > What do the knowledgable people think here about the > similarities and dissimilarities between the Buddhist Bodhisattwa Tara > and the Hindu Godess Tara.
