Guest guest
Dear Hersh-ji, The problem that you describe of how we can reach a non-dual reality by subdivision of the apparently real can be resolved by appreciation of the fact that we misuse noun and adjective and thereby confuse attribute and essence. As Swami Dayananda points out, when we talk about a clay pot, we should really call it 'potty clay'. It is not a substantive pot with an attribute of 'being made out of clay' but clay (and nothing but clay) that just happens, at this moment in time, to be in the form of a pot. Similarly, a 'gold ring' is actually a 'ringy gold' and so on. Thus, your breaking down into more fundamental aspects is missing the point. As you say, clay is actually a mixture of silicon, aluminium and iron oxides so that clay is not a substantive either; it is a form of several chemical elements. If we then look at each chemical element in turn, they are not substantives either. Iron oxide is a form of the elements iron and oxygen. Iron is also a form, with apparent substantives of a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons in particular orbitals. But, as we know, even a proton is not a substantive, being a form of more fundamental particles and an electron, as you have pointed out, is but another form - sometime wave in nature, sometimes particle. When you 'divide' up these apparent substantives, you always discover that they were not 'things' at all but mere name and form of something more fundamental. If science should ever reach its ultimate conclusion, what can it find except that every so-called thing is nothing but name and form of the non-dual Brahman - the only noun which is not an attribute of something else? As it says in the Chandogya Upanishad - sarvam khalvidam brahma - all this (universe) is verily Brahman. By following back all of the relative appearances in the world, we eventually return to that from which it is all manifest - the non-dual reality. Best wishes, Dennis
