Another way of looking at the state of Jnaani - A jnaani is one who has realized. What has he realized? He has realized that he is Brahman - aham brahmaasmi - is his knowledge. Hence scripture says 'brahma vit brahma eva bhavati' knower of Brahman becomes Brahman. That is what is implied by realization - realization of ones own nature. If that is clear, then there is no more individual in that body - 'he' is practically gone and what is there is realized master who knows He is Brahman. Essentially now Brahman 'as though' occupying the body-mind-equipments which had their prArabda since the original tenant has gone. Hence it is the manifested Brahman or Iswara that is now occupying the vacant body-mind-intellect shariira - for what purpose?. For loka laLyAnam or for the benefit of the society since as jnaani He is reveling in himself by himself and has no reason to function for his own sake. Hence one can say it is the Iswara that is operating using the available equipments to fulfill the samaShTi vAsanas of those who are longing for a teacher of that caliber. Hence guru brahma guru vishNu ... etc. Hence it is the Will of the Lord that expresses as His free-will; and the prArabda is of two types as you mentioned - one from the body-mind-intellect aspect which are destined to undergo mutations as nature demands and the second type comes from the disciples merit of gaining this supreme knowledge from a teacher who is realized or samaShTi vAsanas.
