Dear Members:

The language for communication for the advaitin list is English and a

large majority of the members know only English. Given this fact,

members are obligated to make sure that the content of their messages

is understood by everyone. This does not mean that members should not

quote texts and poems in other languages. On the contrary messages

will become more effective with original quotations along with an

English translation of whatever is quoted.

Since most of Sankara's original writings (also key Hindu scriptures)

are in Sanskrit language, the list welcomes (and encourages) members

to include them appropriately in their messages. The recent request

from Durgaji explains the importance of making English translation of

Sanskrit materials quoted in the postings. Please be considerate to

your fellow members and include appropriate translation (or summary)

of the Sanskrit phrases and quotations that use. Sometimes, we may

not be able to provide exact translation but at those times, we

should at a minimum include a brief summary in English of the quoted

materials. This will be beneficial to the posters (reinforces own

understanding of the quoted materials) and also to the readers.

Most of us already know about the website, http://www.wikipedia.com

that provides extensive information/definition for

words/terms/phrases that we want to know. While browsing, I found

another interesting site, http://www.whatis.com which is similar to

Wikipedia. Though this site is supposed to focus on Information

Technology (IT), it goes beyond IT and provides meanings and

explanations in other fields of science. Most of the time Google

Search does pickup all materials that are available in the net

through Wikipedia, Whatis, etc., other Internet sites.

Unfortunately, they provide sometime too much and sometimes too much

of irrelevant materials and we should be very careful while selecting

the specific words used for the search.
