Guest guest
The great Polymath Srimad Appayya Dikshita makes an interesting statement about the constituent letters of the praNava Om in his work 'SivArkamaNidIpikA'. He says: "It is well known from works such as PrapanchasAra of SrI Sankara that Om (aum) is the combination of the first letter of the first veda, the middle letter of the middle veda and the last letter of the last veda". The first letter of Rgveda is 'a' of agnimILe'. The middle letter of yajurveda is 'u' of the word 'samudro' which comes right in the middle of this veda. The last letter of sAmaveda is 'm', since this veda ends with the words 'samAnam varam'. S.N.Sastri
Guest guest
Namaste Sastri ji, Are your referring to the Samhitas alone when you mean the Vedas? Thanks alot for your contributions to our learning. Your website is a treasure chest. Pranamas, Kathirasan On 8/23/06, S.N. Guest guest
Namaste Kathirasanji, It is clearly the samhita portion.Perhaps we can get more information from PrapanchasAra to which Appayya dIkshita has referred. Thanks very much for your remarks about my website. They are very encouraging regrdas, Sastri On 8/24/06, K Kathirasan <brahmasatyam > wrote: > > Namaste Sastri ji, > > Are your referring to the Samhitas alone when you mean the Vedas? > Thanks alot for your contributions to our learning. This is not in contradiction of the above; just another viewpoint: In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (I 10) wherein occurs the vedic mantra: na karmaNaa na prajayA….., the concluding portion is: yo vedAdau svaraH proktaH, vedAnte cha pratiShThitaH…. While commenting on this in his Bhashyam, Sri Sayaacharya writes: The `vedAdi' = in the beginning (commencement) portion of the Vedas like `agnimILe purohitam', `iShetvorjetvA', etc. the commencement is made with the pranava Om. The `vedAnta' = in the end portion of the Vedas namely the mantra `Omityetad aksharamidam sarvam' = All this is the Letter Om' , the Om is present. The idea is: the Rg veda samhita is the beginning of the Vedic literature. The Atharvana veda Upanishat (Mandukya) is the end portion of the Vedic literature. In the commencement and in the concluding portions the syllable Om is chanted (present = pratiShThitaH). This Pranava, during the dhyana, becomes merged in the (contextual) avyAkR^ita (unmanifest) that is the cause of the universe. In the `a' the viraat is invoked. In the `u' the Hiranyagarha is invoked and in the `ma' avyAkR^ita is invoked. And meditated and telescopically merged in their succeeding constituents. That is viraat is merged in Hiranyagarbha, and this in the moolaprakriti. The Fourth constituent `maatraa' is the naada. He is to be known as the Supreme MaheshvaraH. The ultimate idea is: the Om is all-encompassing the literary Veda . It is all-encompassing the meaning of the Veda. The meditation upon this sacred Om gives rise to the realization of the ultimate purport of the entire Veda: Parabarhman. One can find the above method in the fifth mantra of the Mandukya Upanishad. One may study the Taittiriya Bhashyam of Acharya Shankara for the portion (I -4) which commences: yashcchandasaam R^iShabho…' Pranams to all sadhakas, Subbu Om Tat Sat
