The State Government has filed a case against the Coca-Cola company under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, after its laboratory tests confirmed the presence of high levels of pesticides in the soft drink.

Health Minister R Ashok told a press conference here on Friday that the case was filed on August 12 by the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services at the Small Causes Court Complex, Nrupathuga Road, under the provisions of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.

He said Karnataka was the first State to file a case against the soft-drink firm after the pesticide-in-the-cola controversy broke out. He said the Coca-Cola sample was sent for test at a private laboratory in Bangalore and the testing process was supervised by the health department officials. The government would also file cases against the makers of Thums Up and Mirinda brands, as the pesticide content in these samples were also found to be above the permissible limit. Samples of 12 other soft drinks had also been sent to the laboratory and reports on the level of pesticides were expected in four or five days, after which action would be initiated.

When the government of Kerala ban Coke and Pepsi and other soft drinks the government had not find an alternative for these soft drinks. Government must start massive campaign in colleges and schools among students and in media to encourage the use of tender coconut water as a healthy drink instead of bottled soft drinks. Government can higher some young film stars also for the purpose.

Tender coconut water is most hygienic, healthy, and nutritious. We could see abundant coconut trees every where in Kerala, but you will not get a tender coconut to drink any where like bottled soft drinks available every where.

Main issue to popularise and market the tender coconut is its bulky nature, lack of shelf-life keep it in refrigerator and inconvenience to transport .

Government can solve this problem by setting up Units in all villages to wrap in heat shrink films after the bulky fibre is removed. They can be distributed by these units to retailers through out the state very conveniently. This tender coconut will remain fresh at least seven days and it will cool easily and it requires less electricity for cooling. This scheme will generate job opportunities for hundred of thousands people in the state.

Kerala's economy is controlled by certain extend my coconut price; the low price of ripe coconut effected the economy very badly. At the same time the tender coconut has double the price in the market. As blessing in disguise, the soft drink ban will be good opportunity for the farmers and the total economy of the states.
